“Thank You, Mom!”— From Cover Story to One Year Novel

This Mother’s Day, students from our One Year Adventure Novel program submitted letters of gratitude to their mothers via the student forum. With their permission, we wanted to share one with you here! 

From Cover Story to One Year Adventure Novel

I’ve always been a busy girl. Instead of playing outside, I’d crack open my notebook and scribble about my latest WIP (what we writers call our ‘work in progress’). As both a budding writer and artist, my mom fostered my love of every creative activity I tried. She helped me enter numerous local and online contests, refilled my pen supply that seemed to deplete daily, and persuaded my father to buy yet another bookshelf (because getting rid of notebooks and books was simply not an option).

As a “new” homeschooler, the word ‘curriculum’ was mysterious to me. Instead of choosing a mundane grammar and writing program for seventh grade, my mother found Cover Story. After going through it and making my own magazine with Dr. Daniel Schwabauer’s fun guidelines, I created a wonderful masterpiece that won an honorable mention! I soon discovered One Year Adventure Novel (OYAN), a high school curriculum that teaches you to write a novel in one school year. That was absolute music to my creative ears. My mom eagerly agreed to purchase the curriculum for me.

Since doing OYAN, I have discovered more about my writing style, capabilities, and limits. The forum has provided me with a community of wonderful writers. OYAN taught me valuable lessons like planning, time-management, and communication. I have gone on to write two additional novels and am working on a third.
