The Witherspoon Award

Your Chance to Make Headlines!

Our generous benefactress, Madge Witherspoon, has graciously sponsored an end-of-year competition to showcase the most illustrious work produced by this year’s reporters-in training. It’s time to polish off your favorite Byline assignments and prepare for publication!

Wouldn’t You Like a Salary Increase?

The strongest entry will receive a $50 cash prize.

Runner-up entries will receive a $25 cash prize.

Each student may submit up to THREE long pieces (300–800 words) and up to THREE short pieces (under 300 words). Yes, this is different from what Madge herself said in her video; she refused to re-film for such an “unglamorous” update. Entries over 800 words will not be accepted.

Each piece will be uploaded separately to the submission form. Students may submit anywhere from one to six pieces, as long as no more than three pieces fall in either the “long” or “short” categories.

Submission deadline is May 26, 2023
at 11:59 p.m. Central time.

Awards webinar date to be announced!
