Today we have the honor of featuring a post by Mark Wilson, a frequent speaker at our young writer workshops<\/a>. Professor Wilson is especially beloved for his heartfelt presentations on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien. You can read for yourself why:<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>When I got home last night, after an especially hard week of teaching, I was exhausted. I sighed\u00a0heavily when my wife reminded me about the community Good Friday service. She reminded\u00a0me that it is \u201cwhat we do\u201d<\/strong>\u2014we support anything that strengthens the unity of the church.<\/p>\n

I love Teckla\u2019s quickness to see and do what is right. Over time her highly developed sense of\u00a0\u201cought\u201d has helped me see the beauty and adventure of simply doing one\u2019s duty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But the other source of instruction has been Tolkien\u2019s hobbits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This surprises me because I first read Tolkien as an escape from duty<\/strong>. Through much of my 7th\u00a0grade year of English, I sat in the back reading The Lord of the Rings<\/em>. My dad was an English\u00a0teacher so I knew enough to pass the tests without studying. I should have cared some about\u00a0good grades, but didn\u2019t. I was happy in Middle Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I read Tolkien through the lens of a small-town boy looking to escape his boredom<\/strong>. So when\u00a0Bilbo and Frodo leave the Shire, I cheered, \u201cYeah! Small towns are boring, and the people stupid\u00a0and prying\u2014all Sackville-Bagginses. Hooray for adventure!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, I conveniently ignored all the times Bilbo asks, \u201cWhy did I ever leave the Shire?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I also overlooked Tolkien\u2019s own view of courage.<\/strong> I liked the courage of Aragorn, Gandalf, and\u00a0Gimli who could slice and dice orcs, but hobbits missed most of the battles (a rock knocks Bilbo\u00a0out).<\/p>\n

Hobbit courage was of a different sort<\/strong>. In The Hobbit<\/em> Tolkien says the bravest thing Bilbo ever\u00a0did was decide to walk alone down the tunnel to the red glow of the sleeping dragon. Tolkien\u00a0explains:<\/p>\n

The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He\u00a0fought the real battle in the tunnel alone,<\/strong> before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Before going down the tunnel Bilbo gives a hint of why he is going. He says to himself,<\/p>\n

Now\u00a0you are in for it at last, Bilbo Baggins. You went and put your foot right in it that night of the\u00a0party, and now you have to pull it out and pay for it<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He goes on to say he has no use for\u00a0dragon-guarded treasures. It is only his sense of duty, the obligation to keep his word, that moves\u00a0him into his great adventure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Duty becomes even more central to The Lord of Rings<\/em>. Adventure abounds in Frodo\u2019s quest, but\u00a0there is little talk of seeking adventure<\/strong>. In fact, Frodo sees the difference clearly:<\/p>\n

Bilbo went to\u00a0find a treasure, there and back again; but I go to lose one, and not return, as far as I can see.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Duty<\/em>, rather than an awakened desire for adventure<\/strong>, motivates Frodo. Examples can be\u00a0multiplied. For instance, Sam’s heroism flows out of his fierce faithfulness to Frodo\u2014a\u00a0commitment to stick through thick and thin.<\/p>\n

The hobbit devotion to duty not only drives the plots of Tolkien\u2019s books, but is what makes\u00a0adventure possible<\/strong>.\u00a0Here we discover the amazing realism of Tolkien\u2019s fantasy<\/strong>. In the real world it is duty that leads\u00a0to real adventure and heroism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Listen to any interview with a soldier who is receiving a medal. Again and again they tell us they\u00a0were just doing what they were trained to do<\/strong>\u2014just doing their duty. The same is true of those\u00a0who step up to rescue or protect others from muggers.<\/p>\n

All this may seem obvious, but we should recognize how much contempt Tolkien\u2019s\u00a0contemporaries often heaped on the middle class and its \u201cbourgeois morality.\u201d In much modern\u00a0literature the need to escape small-town morality is seen as essential for real adventure<\/strong>. Duty,\u00a0especially toward family, is seen as the chains that must be broken<\/strong> for the hero or heroine to fully\u00a0realize themselves. Tolkien, however, shows that only by faithfully doing one\u2019s duty do we fulfill\u00a0our potential and our destiny<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Decision by decision<\/strong>, Sam and Frodo become more than they were.<\/p>\n

At the time Tolkien was writing, most academics insisted that history was driven by impersonal\u00a0forces\u2014sociological and economic. Most historians scoffed at the idea that individuals and their\u00a0decisions could change history<\/strong>. Through the voice of Elrond, Tolkien challenges this assumption:<\/p>\n

This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong<\/strong>. Yet such is oft the\u00a0course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must,<\/strong>\u00a0while the eyes of the great are elsewhere.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the long slog of duty through Mordor, Sam and Frodo have no hope of seeing how they might\u00a0move the wheels of the world<\/strong>\u2014they simply do what they \u201cmust.\u201d<\/p>\n

We too seldom see how our faithfulness changes the world<\/strong>. For that we must await the return of\u00a0our king. Until then, we remain a fellowship of small hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Although he says of himself that he’s “about as interesting as Bilbo\u00a0before<\/em>\u00a0his adventures,” the One Year Adventure Novel<\/a> community begs to differ.<\/p>\n

Mark (B.A., Northwest Nazarene College; M.A., Washington State University) teaches literature and writing<\/strong> at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.<\/p>\n

In his own words, he “has the soul of a 12-year-old boy that hopes summer will never end.” No one gives him more joy than his wife, Teckla. Mark is a father, and this brings joy and<\/em> sorrow. His four boys are grown now and moved from home, but are still resident in their parents’s hearts.<\/p>\n

Mark and Teckla live in Myrtle Point which he both loves and hates. When the rain stops, Mark and his Dobermann often walk up to the cemetary on the hill. There he prays for his family and the city. He would like to see these prayers answered before he dies.<\/p>\n
