Emily, a long-time student with The One Year Adventure Novel<\/a>, recently experienced a breakthrough in her struggle with writer’s block. We asked her to share it with us\u2014because, let’s be honest, we all wrestle with this monster sooner or later!<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>If you\u2019ve been writing stories for long, chances are good that you\u2019ve come into contact with the bane of every author\u2019s existence. If you haven\u2019t, the odds of escaping the clutches of this mind-numbing beast are definitely not in your favor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yep, I\u2019m talking about writer\u2019s block<\/strong>. Everybody deals with it differently, but often, it\u2019s a story-halting disaster<\/strong>. You can\u2019t write. Not that you don\u2019t know WHAT to write. You just can\u2019t.<\/strong> Period.<\/p>\n

All you hear is the antagonizing whisper in your mind, \u201cYou\u2019re stuck. Your powers don\u2019t work here, Author!\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve wrestled writer\u2019s block for weeks before. I mean weeks.<\/b> And not because I didn\u2019t have anything to work on. I had a novel, outlined and ready to go, but motivation was out the window and on a shuttle to Mars. This depressed me to the point of questioning my identity as an author. Should I even be doing this? What if storytelling isn\u2019t for me?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

How many of you know what I\u2019m talking about?<\/p>\n

This frustrated me, and I began looking for ways to fight back\u2014to beat writer\u2019s block<\/strong>. I searched Pinterest; I read articles, blog posts, and comments; and virtually every time, I hit the exact same phrase: \u201cJust write.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAwwwww, wut???\u201d These people make it sound so EASY. As if hearing \u201cjust write\u201d summons magical bursts of inspiration from above.<\/strong> Because it doesn\u2019t. In fact, the words \u201cJust write\u201d make me feel like doing a face-keyboard.<\/p>\n

I began to wonder what<\/i> was keeping me from \u201cjust writing.\u201d<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t as if I was out of ideas. Quite the contrary. So what was it? Why<\/em> did trying to find motivation feel like walking across a hard floor covered with Legos? (If you\u2019ve ever done that, you have my condolences.)<\/p>\n

What Is Writer\u2019s Block?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Calling a friend, I asked, \u201cWhat is<\/em> writer\u2019s block?\u201d Because, essentially, I didn\u2019t know. So far, my experience amounted to, \u201cYou know that incredible urge people get when staring at a blank screen to just\u2026put words on it?…..I don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy can\u2019t I just write?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, maybe you\u2019re just over-intellectualizing things,\u201d<\/strong> he answered.<\/p>\n

It was the last response I expected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After some thought, I came up with what I believe is a somewhat different \u201ctake\u201d on the monster<\/strong> that we call writer\u2019s block. I realized that I spent more time thinking<\/em> about writing, than I did actually writing<\/strong>, which led me to conclude that maybe \u201cwriter\u2019s block\u201d isn\u2019t what I\u2019ve always thought it is<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What if, instead of a lack of creativity, it\u2019s an overloaded thought process<\/strong>? The strain of trying to logically work out how to get from point A to point B in a scene was draining me so much that, by the time I read those \u201chow-to-defeat-writer\u2019s-block\u201d inspirational posts, my brain was like, \u201cJust write? You\u2019ve gotta be kidding me!\u201d The over-thinking was essentially killing my creativity.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I realized that I had a habit of skirting actually<\/em> writing<\/strong> by telling myself, \u201cWell, I\u2019m just pushing my creativity,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m searching for motivation,\u201d when in fact, over-intellectualizing the story was stealing both<\/strong> of those things. I couldn\u2019t \u201cjust write\u201d, because I was too wrapped up in the details. Really, I needed to tell myself, \u201cThis is a first draft!<\/em> It can be messy.\u201d Creativity flows best when it flows naturally.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Complex storylines often increase the temptation to intellectualize.<\/strong> It\u2019s at this point where you have to realize what is and what isn\u2019t<\/em> over-thinking. There\u2019s a line between creativity and intellectualizing.<\/p>\n

Over-thinking a story is like trying to force creativity down a certain path when maybe it\u2019s not even the best direction. If you worry too much about where things are going, you\u00a0 can miss valuable ideas that could\u2019ve made your work better.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Setting overly-ambitious deadlines also aids and abets writer\u2019s block. I set them because I want to motivate myself. However, this usually backfires<\/strong> and I end up with writer\u2019s block, because I can\u2019t sort the story out in my head<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Realizing this explained why the words \u201cJust write\u201d made me freeze up and want to take a baseball bat to my laptop. All of those articles and blog posts were telling me what<\/em> to do, but wouldn\u2019t explain why<\/em> I was dealing with writer\u2019s block in the first place.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Understanding the problem is the first step in finding a cure.<\/p>\n

I imagine that the phrase, \u201cJust write\u201d works fine when you\u2019re out of ideas. After all, you\u2019ve just got to release a new stream of creativity. It\u2019s when you\u2019ve got too much to deal with that you begin to over-analyze the story, and it becomes real writer\u2019s block.<\/p>\n

Once I understood that I was over-intellectualizing my work, the mental blocks all made sense. I couldn\u2019t write because I was blocking<\/em> my creativity.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a First Draft!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be the first to say that I have problems with writing first drafts. Why? I\u2019m a perfectionist. Majorly. Thus my over-thinking issues. But the truth is, you can\u2019t go about fixing something unless it exists<\/strong>. My writer\u2019s block stemmed from the fact that I was trying to \u201cfix\u201d my story before it even hit the paper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

First drafts are about feelings; emotions. They\u2019re for scoping out your story and exploring it. All the tedious intellectualizing can be saved for draft two<\/strong>. As my friend so aptly said, \u201cSeriously, don\u2019t think about it. Your first draft can look like a kindergartner wrote it.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s true. Something has to be real before it can be beautiful.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Know Your Writer\u2019s Block<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, this isn\u2019t meant to be another \u201chow you beat writer\u2019s block\u201d post, so much as \u201cthis is what I think writer\u2019s block is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saying \u201cJust write\u201d doesn\u2019t help.<\/strong> It\u2019s identifying some of the reasons why<\/em> you\u2019re struggling<\/strong> that will help you. Everybody has a different experience when it comes to writer\u2019s block, and knowing what you\u2019re dealing with<\/strong> can change everything.<\/p>\n
