The following exchange has been endured by myself and others far more often than any of us cares to mention. Does it sound familiar?<\/p>\n

New Acquaintance: \u201cWhat are you studying?\u201d<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cEnglish.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! What are\u00a0you gonna do with that?<\/strong> Teach?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh!….\u201d (Insert uncertain look here as my new acquaintance debates whether or not to encourage said pursuit. They wish I\u2019d said \u201cI want to be a dental hygienist\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m an engineer\u201d so they could appropriately commend my grown-up- sounding life goals).<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s this joke. Have you heard it?<\/p>\n

How do you get an English major off your front porch? You pay for the pizza.<\/p>\n

Ouch.<\/p>\n

Yes, I majored in English, despite the common perception \u2013 both spoken and unspoken \u2013 that it was a bad idea. By pursuing it, I fulfilled most people\u2019s expectations<\/strong>: writers major in English.<\/p>\n

People have a myriad of ideas about writers. English majors don\u2019t make money, it\u2019s said, and so writing should just be a hobby. More than one writing mentor I consulted said, \u201cDon\u2019t do it.\u201d Articles and books I read wavered on the topic, but most condemned the pursuit of the English degree. I did eventually change my major, but not until I completed the Associates in English.<\/p>\n

Writers themselves have plenty of ideas about writers, too. I am no exception. I had expectations I decided other writers should likewise follow.<\/strong> I have been writing stories since I knew what a story was, and since the age of twelve I\u2019ve written approximately one novel a year. Being a relatively \u201cweathered writer\u201d amongst most writers in my support groups, I felt like those who didn\u2019t write as much or who hadn\u2019t been writing as long couldn\u2019t be \u201creal\u201d writers. (Spoiler: I was wrong.) And then, because I didn\u2019t follow all the rules my writer friends seemed to follow (\u201cAll real writers stay up ungodly hours writing. All real writers talk to their characters. All real writers carry notebooks with them. All real writers think about NOTHING but writing.\u201d), I felt I wasn\u2019t doing everything I was supposed to do to be a \u201creal writer\u201d either<\/strong>. I met published teenagers and felt as though I was falling short of my own identity. I struggled with what others expected me to do with my talent, as have many other adolescent writers. I was always either doing too little or doing too much by identifying as a \u201cwriter.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, where do we, as writers, draw the line? Who are we and what should we be doing with ourselves?<\/strong> Should we dive all in, or should we keep the writing-thing at a \u201chobby-level\u201d?<\/p>\n

First, as a writer, you probably fall into one of the following three categories:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The Covert \u201cHobby\u201d Writer.<\/strong> When someone asks what you do, writing is the last thing you mention\u2014even if it\u2019s the thing that keeps you up at night. You\u2019re just a bit shy to tell people you write. You\u2019re probably majoring as a dental hygienist.<\/li>\n
  2. The Extreme Writer.<\/strong> It\u2019s your identity, it\u2019s your passion, you\u2019re gonna be a writer\/literary agent\/editor (if you grow up), and you\u2019re gonna make it big. Right now, you\u2019re probably living on Ramen, wondering how to pay for your next conference, chatting online with writing support groups, living the Writer Life and proud of it.<\/li>\n
  3. The Guy in the Middle.<\/strong> You identify unashamedly as a writer, but you\u2019re also pursuing other things.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now that you can see there are different kinds of writers (and perhaps there are more), let me establish something else:<\/p>\n

    It doesn\u2019t matter which one you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Here\u2019s another (frustrating) truth: I can\u2019t tell you what you\u2019re supposed to be doing with your art.<\/p>\n

    What I can say for sure: if you like writing, honor the gift that you\u2019ve been given to the best of your ability\u2026 by writing.<\/p>\n

    Do you like writing? Then write.<\/strong> Do you like other things? Do those, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    I don\u2019t regret my choices. I learned from majoring in English, it was a field I was comfortable pursuing, and it was\u2013at the time\u2013the way I honored my gifting. And yes, now I\u2019m pursuing other things, and writing on the side. And yes, it\u2019s ok for me to do that, too.<\/p>\n

    You shouldn\u2019t regret your choices, either, because one thing that all writers have in common is that we write from our experiences<\/strong>. And part of our experiences is changing our minds, exploring our options, daydreaming, building and re-building, and finding our place in life. Everything happens for a reason. Don\u2019t let expectations hold you fast to one thing if you\u2019re supposed to move on, and don\u2019t let them make you give up something that means the world to you.<\/p>\n

    What makes you a real writer? Let\u2019s keep it simpler than the world has made it out to be. You write what you love, and you love what you write. No matter how difficult it may be, don\u2019t let others\u2019 expectations make you pursue it more or less than you should<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
