My life was nothing but questions.<\/p>\n

We writers question lots of things in the writing industry because nothing is set in stone. What if\u00a0I were to include a prologue? What if I used an adverb this one time? What if I were to write this\u00a0in third-person point of view instead of first?<\/p>\n

As time passed, and my confidence grew, I started adding other questions to my list: Am I ready<\/strong>\u00a0to submit this piece? Am I willing to invest money, time, and other resources into this\u00a0submission? Am I brave enough to take a risk and actually publish something? For many years,\u00a0the answers were all No<\/em>, No<\/em>, and HEAVEN FORBID, NO<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But, like writing, our lives are not set in stone<\/strong>. In May 2016, I took a very deep breath and said,\u00a0Okay, I\u2019m ready<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With that shift in perspective, my questions changed. They turned from what if<\/em>s and am I<\/em>s into\u00a0how can<\/em>s. \u201cDear Internet, how can I publish a book?\u201d The Internet replied with things like this:<\/p>\n

Each method of publishing a book is its own mix of goods, bads, and surprising uglies. On the\u00a0one hand, traditional publishing offers better access to exposure, expertise, and a vast number\u00a0of\u00a0resources<\/strong>. On the other hand, self publishing gives you more control over your choices<\/strong> and is\u00a0much easier to get into<\/strong>. Is one objectively better than the other? I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING<\/strong><\/p>\n

+ Assistance with \u201call the things!<\/p>\n

– Responsibility (\u201cI have to do and pay\u00a0for everything myself…\u201d)<\/p>\n

+ Autonomy (\u201cI get to do everything\u00a0myself!\u201d)<\/p>\n

+ Easy to get into<\/p>\n

Eventually, I decided to enter a novel into a contest hosted by Penguin Young Readers<\/em> and We\u00a0Need Diverse Books<\/em>. Because I am good at planning, I also decided to self-publish a poetry\u00a0book.<\/p>\n

My reasons for submitting my longer works through more conventional means (in this case,\u00a0taking a wild shot in the dark at a contest) were pretty simple: Print distribution is still perfectly\u00a0geared towards traditional publishing.<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing quite like having a proven team of\u00a0qualified professionals to work with.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s the allure of someday being a lofty, widely-known author\u2026 about thirty years\u00a0after I die. That seems more likely if I were to be traditionally published.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, I still chose to self-publish my collection of poetry<\/strong>, A Head Full of Flowers and\u00a0a Heart Full of Lies<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s a quirky little book with 31 poems, and I wrote it mainly for my friends\u00a0and family. It was a much simpler project with much smaller goals. I didn\u2019t make very much\u00a0money from it. I (intentionally) did nothing more than word-of- mouth marketing.<\/p>\n

But none of that made self-publishing it any less scary.<\/p>\n

I did a lot of research.<\/strong> Regardless of the publishing route you decide to take, I encourage you do\u00a0the same. Realize, however, that researching can only get you so far<\/strong> and that there are many\u00a0things you will have to learn through the process of doing. This is why I hesitate to give anyone\u00a0advice on this. Although many blogs and sites will give helpful advice on what you can do, so\u00a0much of it comes down to what you as a person are able and willing to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For instance, self-publishing a book really is running a business<\/strong>. And because of how business\u00a0works in our society, running a business often means becoming a brand. It\u2019s not enough to just\u00a0submit a couple of ads or build a few webpages. You have to really know your audience\u2014who\u00a0you want to start a dialogue with. And, more importantly, you have to include them in the\u00a0conversation. (Using cat gifs is probably not the most effective way to do this).<\/p>\n

Another business challenge I never expected is the number of different options to choose from\u00a0for distribution<\/strong>. CreateSpace and Lulu are the two biggest contenders, but there are so many\u00a0companies cropping up. The thing is, most of these other companies tend to have a lower ceiling\u00a0for how far you can go. And you will end up having to put even more work into the marketing\u00a0side of things.<\/p>\n

Oh yeah, and you may have to pay for stuff. I ended up paying a lot more<\/em> for ISBNs than I might\u00a0have because I owned the publishing company, and I wanted my imprint\u2019s name to be on the\u00a0book. I paid the government so that the company would be legal. I paid an amazing font designer<\/a>\u00a0so that I could use her typeface on the cover of my book.<\/p>\n

Other important things you should definitely consider paying a qualified person to do include:\u00a0editing the whole book<\/strong> (seriously, please don\u2019t ever skip this), formatting the manuscript<\/strong> (once\u00a0for each format you use), designing your cover<\/strong>. Not everyone has to pay a professional for all\u00a0three, but there are enough embarrassing examples out there of poorly self-published books that I\u00a0should mention them.<\/p>\n

Best thing to do is set a budget<\/strong>. The lower the budget is, the more work (and learning) you\u00a0should expect to put in yourself.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, I honestly don\u2019t think that self-publishing is for everyone, but I do believe\u00a0that anyone can do it<\/strong>. And I believe that the best way to find out if it\u2019s right for you is to try it\u00a0yourself.<\/p>\n

By most measures, this year might have been considered a year of failures for me. All the money\u00a0I made from that little book went straight toward two college textbooks, none of my short story\u00a0submissions have gone anywhere, and I won\u2019t hear anything about the contest for several\u00a0months. The rest of my life hasn\u2019t looked so hot either.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, maybe because of all this, I\u2019ve developed a strange appreciation for those\u00a0failures.<\/p>\n

When I first started writing, I did it because it seemed safe<\/strong>. It left me room for error. Using\u00a0written language gave me the opportunity to reconsider what I wanted to say\u2014to say not the\u00a0first, but the second, third, or fourth thing that came to mind. Writing also gave me a false sense\u00a0of protection from the world. I had this romantic notion of a person scribbling at an oak desk in\u00a0isolation, hidden in his own private corner of the world.<\/p>\n

Writers are not meant to be safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who we are, whether we realize it or not, are breakers of boundaries, seekers of opportunity,\u00a0builders of worlds, takers of risk. If I learned anything out of this whole process, it was more\u00a0than just how to get a book out there. It was how to put myself<\/em> out there<\/strong>. Is it scary? Yes, and it\u00a0probably always will be. Is it hard? Yes, but it\u2019s only as hard as you make it. And is self-publishing better than traditional publishing? Both yes and no.<\/p>\n

Is it worth it? I suppose that\u2019s something you\u2019ll have to answer yourself.<\/p>\n
