Step 1: Weigh the Costs.<\/h2>\n

It may not cost much money to start editing, but it is a commitment of time<\/strong>\u2014a big one.\u00a0You may also need to pay to take some online courses to become a proficient editor.\u00a0(Check out the online copyediting courses and certification offered by UC Berkeley and\u00a0Editcetera.) While online courses won\u2019t cost anywhere near the amount of getting an\u00a0academic degree, it\u2019s still a cost. And the time you take to learn to edit takes time away\u00a0from a paid job or family time.<\/p>\n

Editing isn\u2019t something you can just jump into and try, like a job at a supermarket. You\u00a0really have to be at a proficient level to begin marketing and selling your services.\u00a0When you tell someone you are a freelance editor, you are promising you can deliver\u00a0professional-quality work.<\/strong> Can you?<\/p>\n

If you aren\u2019t sure your editing is professional quality yet, you\u2019ll need to spend a good\u00a0chunk of time learning, then honing your skills, starting at the bottom to ensure you know\u00a0what you\u2019re doing and that you aren\u2019t making embarrassing mistakes.<\/p>\n

Editing is challenging because you often have no idea what things you don\u2019t know<\/strong>. You\u00a0may think a word is spelled correctly, but the only way you\u2019ll know is if you look it up.\u00a0Believe me when I say even professional editors (myself included!) discover they\u2019ve\u00a0been making mistakes they had no idea they were making.\u00a0The quality of your editing work may already be great, but taking time to confirm that\u00a0will give you confidence and peace of mind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

HOW I CAN HELP<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I started editing, I found it frustrating when trying to gauge my proficiency. I\u00a0wished I had someone to check my work, to show me what I didn\u2019t know. Step 2: Keep Writing.<\/h2>\n

Learn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Read all the books you can get your hands on about how to write and\u00a0how to edit. Attend writers\u2019 conferences so you can polish your writing skills and\u00a0meet other people in the business.<\/p>\n

Write.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consider writing magazine articles, short stories, or blog posts so you\u2019ll\u00a0have experience with all kinds of writing.<\/p>\n

Self-edit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Find or start a writers\u2019 critique group so you can do some free editing to\u00a0get experience. You will get feedback on what people find helpful<\/strong> and improve\u00a0your own writing skills<\/strong>. Go over your manuscripts again and again, making them\u00a0better every time. Get your manuscripts as polished and perfect as you can\u2014right\u00a0down to the spelling and punctuation.<\/p>\n

Hire a Professional Editor.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not only will this help you improve your own writing, you\u2019ll get a good inside\u00a0look at the kinds of things an editor does. You may even want to send your work\u00a0to two or three editors to get a feel for different styles.\u00a0Connect with these professional writers and ask them for feedback so you can see\u00a0where you\u2019re making mistakes.<\/strong>\u00a0This is a terrific way to help you spot your weak areas, in lieu of hiring me to\u00a0mentor you.<\/p>\n

Get Published.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you intend to edit books? If you haven\u2019t had several manuscripts accepted and\u00a0published by paying markets, you might have a hard time convincing potential\u00a0clients that you know what you\u2019re doing<\/strong>. Many times clients will count on you to\u00a0provide suggestions regarding where they can market their work.<\/p>\n

In addition, the contacts you make at publishing houses through your writing can\u00a0get you into editing for those houses. I often edit and critique for my publisher,\u00a0and my agents have also referred me to other clients of theirs to edit their\u00a0manuscripts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Step 3: Evaluate and Plan.<\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve weighed the costs and figured out what you need to do next. Now here are some\u00a0areas in which you can evaluate yourself for even more insight.<\/p>\n

Your Personality<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you a self-motivated, organized, flexible person<\/strong> who can work well without\u00a0supervision? Or, if left to your own devices, would you sleep in, call a friend, run\u00a0errands, clean the house, or go shopping, and never get around to doing much\u00a0work? If you struggle to stay on task, you need a plan.<\/p>\n

Are you the kind of person who thrives on socialization<\/strong>? How well will you cope\u00a0with working alone every day, having no coworkers to chat with? Again, if\u00a0there\u2019s a chance you will get lonesome or restless, you need a plan.<\/p>\n

Are you excessively picky about details<\/strong>? No matter how good you are at\u00a0evaluating a manuscript\u2019s overall strengths and weaknesses, if your client finds\u00a0typos, misspelled words, or errors in punctuation after you\u2019ve edited a manuscript,\u00a0those little oversights can make you look unprofessional. Commit to proofing\u00a0your own edits!<\/p>\n

Are you good at providing a balance of encouragement and helpful suggestions<\/strong>\u00a0for improvement? If you\u2019re not the \u201ccheerleader\u201d type, this might be a\u00a0challenging vocation for you. How can you grow in the art of encouragement? Is\u00a0there someone you could emulate who models this?<\/p>\n

Your Setup<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you have an office space where you can work without distractions<\/strong>? Do you\u00a0have up-to- date computer equipment, email and Internet capability, the latest\u00a0version of Microsoft Word, and a good virus scan program? Are you willing and\u00a0able to check your email several times a day?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll need to keep good records you can give to an accountant at tax time, so a\u00a0program such as Quickbooks is very helpful (that\u2019s what I use). Don\u2019t forget that\u00a0you may need time to become proficient using it.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also need a good way to keep track of your clients and all correspondence\u00a0with them. I use LessannoyingCRM.com as my CRM (customer relationship\u00a0management) program online.\u00a0In my mentoring program, I help you with all these aspects of your freelance\u00a0business.<\/p>\n

Your Finances<\/strong><\/p>\n

Talk candidly with your family about money. You probably won\u2019t make much for\u00a0at least the first couple of years.<\/strong> If you can\u2019t pay the bills just from editing, you\u00a0may want to just do editing on the side until you have enough work to quit your\u00a0day job.<\/p>\n

Even after you\u2019ve been freelancing for a while, the work is often \u201cfeast or\u00a0famine.\u201d You\u2019ll have some months when you barely have time to breathe, and\u00a0other months when you\u2019ll wonder how you\u2019re going to pay the electric bill. If you\u00a0don\u2019t have a steady income that can cover the expenses on slow months, you\u00a0could run into serious trouble.<\/p>\n

Your Availability<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you have young children at home, don\u2019t expect to make very much money\u00a0editing because you won\u2019t be able to devote much focused time to it. Editing\u00a0takes concentration, which can be in short supply if you\u2019ve got kids running\u00a0around making noise and clamoring for your attention.<\/p>\n

After all this evaluation, if you still believe you\u2019d make a good freelance editor . . .<\/p>\n

Step 4: Prepare.<\/h2>\n

Get the Right Reference Books.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you know what reference books are used by the industry you plan to edit for?\u00a0For example, if you wish to edit authors\u2019 manuscripts, do you know what style\u00a0guide(s) and dictionary(ies) are used by book, magazine, and newspaper\u00a0publishers today? (If you have an account on the OYAN Student Forum<\/a>, see my\u00a0handout for my recommended list of reference books. It\u2019s under \u201cWorkshop\u00a0Handouts and Presentations\u201d on the \u201cSummer Workshop & Reunion\u201d board.)<\/p>\n

Study<\/em> the Reference Books.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get into the habit of looking up any word of which you are not absolutely 100\u00a0percent sure of the spelling. And read the definition and part of speech to make\u00a0sure you\u2019re using the right spelling for that usage.\u00a0Look up punctuation rules and style guidelines. Don\u2019t rely on what you think you\u00a0know<\/strong>, or what you remember from high school or a writing course you took, or\u00a0even on the collaborative opinions of other writers or English teachers. The rules\u00a0for book writing are different from the rules for term papers or even for articles.\u00a0That\u2019s why you have to rely on the appropriate style guides.<\/p>\n

Most publishing houses and editing networks will administer a test to evaluate\u00a0your skills before they hire you. You don\u2019t have to know everything . . . but you\u00a0do have to know where to look up the right answers.<\/p>\n

Try to Anticipate Situations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Expect to be asked to \u201cjust take a look\u201d at people\u2019s manuscripts for free. Decide\u00a0ahead of time if you want to do freebies in order to gain experience.<\/strong> If an editing\u00a0client asks you to rewrite her rough draft, how much original writing are you\u00a0willing to do? Will you charge for your services up front or do the work first and\u00a0then expect to be paid after?<\/p>\n

Step 5: Get the Word Out.<\/h2>\n

Just as a writer\u2019s work is not done when his\/her book is published, an editor can\u2019t simply\u00a0be a good editor. You must advertise yourself<\/strong>, market your services, and let people know\u00a0what you can do.<\/p>\n

I love being a professional freelance editor. I wake up every morning amazed that I can\u00a0make a living at something I enjoy so much.<\/p>\n

But freelancing is not right for everybody. Not everyone will be successful at it, just as\u00a0not everyone who wants to write a book will actually get one published. But if you\u2019re\u00a0willing to put in the time and effort to do it well, it can happen!<\/p>\n
