I\u2019m a big fan of blogs. Anyone who knows me will tell you as much. In fact, blogging is one of\u00a0my favorite things to discuss, and I\u2019m excited for the opportunity to talk about it with you guys\u00a0here at One Year Adventure Novel<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Now, I know what you might be thinking: \u201cBut I\u2019m a novelist. I don\u2019t blog.\u201d<\/strong> Fair enough. For a\u00a0long time, I felt the same way. Blogging was for people who didn\u2019t\u2014or couldn\u2019t\u2014write fiction;\u00a0why should I bother with it? Well, the truth is, there are a lot of reasons you should bother.<\/p>\n

1: Blogging helps you learn to write consistently<\/h3>\n

If you hope to make something of yourself as a writer, you need to develop good habits<\/strong>. Sitting\u00a0down to write five-thousand words won\u2019t matter if you don\u2019t do it on a regular basis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starting a blog will push you to exercise your writing muscles<\/strong> consistently. When you start\u00a0adhering to a weekly blogging schedule, it teaches you the discipline you need to create truly\u00a0amazing content.<\/p>\n

2: Blogging develops your voice<\/h3>\n

By writing consistently, you have a chance to explore\u2014to dig deep and find your own rhythms.\u00a0Here\u2019s a secret: you\u2019ve already got a voice<\/strong>; you just have to use it. So practice. Challenge\u00a0yourself to look at writing from another angle.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you\u2019ve got to push out of your comfort zone in order to fully unmask your voice.\u00a0Having experience outside the world of fiction can help you pull back the layers of fluff and\u00a0define your style, so you can channel meaning through your words to impact your readers.<\/p>\n

3: Blogging gives you a place to connect with your readers<\/h3>\n

Books are excellent\u2014don\u2019t get me wrong\u2014but they don\u2019t offer a way to connect to the author,\u00a0and we live in a world where people value connection. Connection builds trust, and trust leads to\u00a0loyalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blogging nurtures a personal connection with your readers. It gives you a \u201chome base\u201d where\u00a0you can be available to engage with them, and few things will endear you more to your audience\u00a0than being approachable.<\/p>\n

4: Blogging connects you with other authors and influencers<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s be honest: there\u2019s a lot more to being a successful writer than putting words on a page.\u00a0(Some of you might remember Torry Martin<\/a>\u2019s talk from the 2015 Summer Workshop about\u00a0networking.) Success isn\u2019t just about what you know, but who you know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You need a place where you can begin to connect with other authors and influencers, and\u00a0blogging is where it\u2019s at. Blogging develops mutually beneficial relationships<\/strong> with other authors,\u00a0and gives you an opportunity to get your work in front of potential publishers, agents, and people\u00a0who can put a good word in for you.<\/p>\n

5: Blogging gives you a platform from which to market your\u00a0books<\/h3>\n

Now before you run away, because ewww, self-promotion, I hate self-promotion. A lot. Maybe\u00a0more than you. But marketing\u2014while important\u2014doesn\u2019t have to be sleazy or slimy or self-promo-y.<\/p>\n

In fact, when you develop a loyal base of readers (or a \u201cplatform\u201d), you\u2019ll find they actually want\u00a0to be marketed to<\/strong>. They want to know what you have to offer, and they want to buy it, because\u00a0they trust you to deliver something valuable. (See how important connection is?)<\/p>\n

6: Blogging gives you a place to share things you\u2019ve learned<\/h3>\n

One of the best ways to stay sharp with something is to teach it. Blogging gives you an\u00a0opportunity to share your knowledge with others, whether about good writing technique, or how\u00a0writing impacted your life. (And who knows? You might just learn something yourself<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Be generous with your knowledge.<\/strong> This is the key to building that valuable connection. Don\u2019t\u00a0hold back. Sharing your knowledge will not only build trust, it will also increase your credibility\u00a0with your readers.<\/p>\n

7: Blogging helps you break into the Perilous Realm of writing\u00a0for an audience<\/h3>\n

Showing your writing to others can be intimidating. Will they like it? What if they don\u2019t? Is it\u00a0even any good? Questions like these darken the recesses of our minds when we consider putting\u00a0our writing \u201cout there.\u201d<\/p>\n

And blogging doesn\u2019t make the uncertainty go away. What it will do is teach you to be brave<\/strong>;\u00a0it\u2019ll push you past the uncertainty into that Perilous Realm over and over until you no longer feel\u00a0so intimidated. Because after all, courage is one of the most vital parts of being a writer.<\/p>\n
