Creativity Crumbling<\/h3>\n

You hear many dangerous things as a writer. Perhaps you hear, \u201cYour prose is\u00a0rhyming, but in the bad kind of way.\u201d Maybe it\u2019s, \u201cYour characters seem like robots.\u201d Or\u00a0a simple, \u201cThis is boring.\u201d Tough criticism should be expected, but in the ocean of\u00a0comments toeing the line of becoming insults, there is one dangerous judgment a\u00a0writer can\u2019t brush away<\/strong>. It sticks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour story doesn\u2019t seem original.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gut punch. You feel the impact immediately, but it is a slow kind of pain that\u00a0builds with time. It is a pain you can\u2019t ignore because it attacks the core of your body,\u00a0your art, your novel. Once the punch is delivered, it changes the way you act and think.\u00a0Your future works are damaged<\/strong> by the sickening thought, \u201cPerhaps I can\u2019t actually\u00a0create. Perhaps these things aren\u2019t worth the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before you label yourself as a worthless thief, stop and think about why you\u00a0were punched. Stop and breathe. Where do ideas really come from? A spiral of stolen\u00a0concepts, copied techniques, and unconscious influences trails behind every single\u00a0work of art. The spiral behind your own work isn\u2019t as poisonous as you might think<\/strong>.\u00a0Don\u2019t let that punch crumble you.<\/p>\n

The Place Where Ideas Come From<\/h3>\n

We, as humans, cannot create.<\/p>\n

In plain language, it\u2019s a shock to read, but it\u2019s the truth. Ideas are born of two\u00a0main elements. The first is influence<\/strong>. Take a popular story and trace its influences back\u00a0in time, and you\u2019ll find that it is not a new thing, but a brilliant mix of other works. In its\u00a0purest form, creation is the act of bringing something new into existence\u2014as only God\u00a0does. Humans are excellent patchwork artists, but that is where our abilities end. There\u00a0is no art without influence<\/strong>, and even with<\/em> influence, there\u2019s one missing factor that\u00a0changes the way we build stories.<\/p>\n

Necessity is the second main element<\/strong>. Alexander Graham Bell was not the only<\/em>\u00a0inventor of the telephone. Elisha Gray had the same idea, but Mr. Gray arrived at the\u00a0patent office a few hours later than Bell. Why did both men make the same thing at the\u00a0same time? It\u2019s simple. The need for a fast communication device weighed on each\u00a0inventor until they found a solution. Necessity is an unexpected\u2014and often overlooked\u00a0\u2014factor in the making of art, but without it, nothing would work the same.<\/p>\n

The nature of ideas is a complicated topic, but the truths we draw from it have\u00a0healing power. Patchwork art is not a bad<\/em> thing because it yields beautiful ideas in the\u00a0only way humanly possible. It still yields. And sometimes results are produced from\u00a0necessity, so when you look at your story and wonder if it is worth your time, just know\u00a0that it exists for a reason, even if that reason isn\u2019t clear.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But when the bruise still aches, how do we see clearly?<\/p>\n

Comparison, Doubt, and Worth<\/h3>\n

Many people fall into the comparison trap. It\u2019s a whirlpool that throws you in\u00a0circles, pulls you under the sea, and ends the art you\u2019ve started. When someone tells\u00a0you they\u2019ve heard your idea before, the immediate human reaction is to hunt down the\u00a0similarities and kill them. This is partly because no one wants to feel guilty of theft, but\u00a0the major reason is that uniqueness<\/em> is a measure of self worth<\/em><\/strong>. You want to feel needed.\u00a0A critique questioning your originality causes you to doubt your usefulness.<\/p>\n

Two things: One, you can\u2019t stop nasty critics. Two, you can<\/em> accept the\u00a0patchwork nature of human work and use it to its max.<\/p>\n

Stories exist to affect us, and I am one hundred percent certain the story you are\u00a0creating right now<\/em> is affecting you<\/strong>. Perhaps it is helping you think about a cultural issue\u00a0from a different perspective. Perhaps it is helping you reassure yourself of a truth you\u00a0already know. Perhaps it is simply helping you learn to write better stories. Whatever\u00a0the reason, your patchwork piece of art is not a ripoff if it changes you in the way you\u00a0need to change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Creativity Rising<\/h3>\n

The problem of originality reaches far beyond being punched in the gut with a\u00a0sharp critique. It goes beyond accepting the fact that ideas are hybrid creatures born\u00a0of other ideas. It even flies past learning how to survive in the comparison whirlpool.\u00a0Originality is all about meaning, depth, and purpose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour story doesn\u2019t seem original.\u201d<\/p>\n

That punch will always hurt, but you are the one who chooses to give it\u00a0destroying power. We were all given the gift of art, the gift of patchwork, and the gift of\u00a0meaning. We may not be able to create something out of nothing, but we don\u2019t need\u00a0that ability. The way we stitch our art doesn\u2019t matter as much as the picture it\u00a0becomes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
