Hannah Mills won second place in the 2012 OYAN novel contest<\/a>. As one of three finalists,\u00a0Hannah received detailed critiques of her novel, Hosanna House<\/em>, from the professional judges.<\/p>\n

We asked her to share about her experience. But first, a synopsis of her entry:<\/p>\n

Raine Jones is trapped. Sworn to secrecy, she can\u2019t explain her fear of Thomas,\u00a0and without that explanation, her parents just don\u2019t understand. Sent to Hosanna\u00a0House for correction, Raine\u2019s entrapment increases. She\u2019s thrown into a world she\u00a0didn\u2019t want, one she didn\u2019t realize existed. Hosanna House and what she left\u00a0behind are forcing her hand. Will Hosanna House break her or will she find a way\u00a0to break free?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hannah writes:<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Opening the detailed manuscript critiques for Hosanna House<\/em> this past January was both\u00a0exciting and scary.<\/strong> Exciting because I was finally getting my hands on them, and professional\u00a0authors had actually commented on my work. Scary because, well, professional authors had\u00a0actually commented on my work.<\/p>\n

Yeah. Just slightly nerve-wracking. Regardless, I hugged the fat booklets and dove into\u00a0them with happy trepidation.<\/p>\n

The judges were very kind, balancing their constructive criticism with encouragement,\u00a0highlighting what they thought I had done well. After reading through the comments I felt both\u00a0exhausted and elated.<\/strong> The amount of work I faced, implementing their suggestions, drained me\u00a0before I even started. Yet the encouragement gave me a high that nearly outweighed my\u00a0apprehension at the thought of an overhaul.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still working on the manuscript. At the moment, I am in the middle of a second\u00a0intense edit.<\/p>\n

Have the professional critiques helped?<\/p>\n

Goodness, yes. If you get a professional\u2019s help in going over your novel, treasure it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cherish every word, even those that aren\u2019t applicable to where you want to take your story.\u00a0The judges who gave me feedback on Hosanna House<\/em> pointed out, affirmed, or\u00a0reaffirmed some major problems with the manuscript and characters.\u00a0For one, lack of inter-character conflict between my main character and the other teenage\u00a0girls she lives with throughout the majority of the novel. So what am I doing? Going through the\u00a0story and adding just that.<\/strong> Spats, tension, close friendships and snitches. Cliques. Throw ten\u00a0females into close proximity and a dysfunctional situation and things get just a little messy.<\/p>\n

Another point the judges made was that some of my characters needed to be fleshed out.\u00a0Thanks to this feedback, I\u2019m noodling out backstories and finding out why these book people act\u00a0the way they do.<\/strong> It\u2019s all starting to make sense now. I\u2019ve been quite pleased about the moments\u00a0of revelation I have experienced about my characters\u2014many of which are now incorporated into\u00a0the manuscript. The things I am finding out about my characters make sense in the context of\u00a0their actions, and that\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

One difficulty with processing these critiques is finding the balance between some of the\u00a0comments and what I know to be true due to my research for the story.<\/strong> There is a line separating\u00a0what I know is right for the story, and what others see as illogical. One judge said the central\u00a0character in Hosanne House<\/em> accepts abuse too easily. And yes, under many circumstances, that\u00a0would be true. My personal observations and research into Raine\u2019s type of background and\u00a0lifestyle, however, yield different conclusions. Developing this insight in the reader is part of my\u00a0vision for Hosanna House<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But, very importantly, there were also some things the judges liked. They found my main\u00a0character very real and three-dimensional, and they enjoyed the way I incorporated art into the\u00a0manuscript.<\/p>\n

The overall experience has been fantastically helpful.<\/strong> To date, the major changes I can\u00a0attribute to the judges are: more inter-character conflict, the rounding out of several characters,\u00a0several people being cut entirely, my central character taking more of an active role, the reworking\u00a0of a major turning point, and many more art\/artist references to flesh out the\u00a0descriptions.<\/p>\n

This is the tip of the proverbial iceberg, really. I\u2019ve barely made a dent in the incredibly\u00a0detailed comment sheets. I keep returning to them, and each time, I tack another item onto my to-edit\u00a0list. To me this is more valuable than a cash prize would have been.<\/strong> I\u2019m excited to see\u00a0where, with hard work and the help of the judges, Hosanna House<\/em> will end up.<\/p>\n
