A Cover Story haiku and senryu contest<\/span><\/h1>\n

We are hosting another contest event for our Cover Story<\/em> students! Any student who is currently using the curriculum <\/strong>is eligible to enter their haiku poems from\u00a0Lessons 16 & 17 <\/strong>or senryu poems from\u00a0Lesson 61\u00a0<\/strong>for a chance to win some fun prizes!<\/p>\n

How Your Student Can Enter<\/h1>\n
    \n
  1. Any student using Cover Story<\/em> this school year is eligible to submit two haiku or senryu poems<\/strong>, or one of each.<\/li>\n
  2. The poems must be submitted by the parent\/teacher of the student.<\/li>\n
  3. To be eligible for prizes, the poems must come from the student’s own mind<\/strong>, with no outside input from family, friends, or teachers.<\/li>\n
  4. The poems must be accompanied by the student’s first name, age, state\/province of residence, and shipping address<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Submission deadline: 11:59pm Central Time on February 12, 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”]

      Contest Guidelines<\/h1>\n

      Both of these types of poems have a 5 – 7 – 5<\/strong> syllable structure, like so:<\/p>\n

      Haiku<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
      \nHaiku are themed around
      \nnature or the seasons.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      In the autumn breeze,<\/span><\/em><\/span>
      \nleaves curl up at the edges,<\/span><\/em><\/span>
      \nshiver, drift away.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      Senryu<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThemed around people or events,<\/strong> often ending in a twist that makes them humorous or gives them a point.<\/span><\/p>\n

      My sister stampedes<\/span><\/em>
      \ndownstairs, calls “We’re late!” and trips<\/span><\/em>
      \nover a stray shoe.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      \"\"<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]NOTE:<\/strong> Students have some leeway with these syllable guidelines, meaning that a 4 – 7 – 5 haiku will not be automatically disqualified from entry. However, we recommend following the intended rhythmic and syllabic structures, as form is one of the criteria we consider when judging<\/strong>. Deviation from the 5 – 7 – 5 syllable structure should be done only if it makes the rhythm of the poem sound more natural<\/strong>, not just because it is easier.
