Welcome to the first\u00a0<\/span>Cover Story<\/span><\/em>\u00a0contest and live webinar event of the new year! Any student who is currently using the curriculum<\/em> is eligible to enter<\/strong>\u00a0their short story from lesson 48<\/strong>\u00a0for a chance to win some awesome prizes!<\/p>\n

Guidelines for short stories can be reviewed below or in lesson 48 of your Student Book.<\/em><\/p>\n

Prizes\"\"<\/h1>\n

For this contest, we will select three winners<\/strong> and two finalists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u2022<\/span><\/strong> The first-place, second-place, and third-place winners<\/strong> will each receive an Amazon gift card worth $25 USD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u2022<\/span> Finalists<\/strong> will receive an autographed copy of one of the novels from Mr. Schwabauer\u2019s Legends of Tira-Nor series: Runt the Brave<\/a><\/em>, Runt the Hunted<\/a><\/em>, or The Curse of the Seer<\/a><\/em>. (If your student is a finalist, we will email you to ask which book he or she would prefer.)<\/p>\n

How Your Student Can Enter<\/h2>\n

    \n
  1. Any student\u00a0using\u00a0Cover Story<\/em>\u00a0this school year<\/strong>\u00a0is eligible to submit one short story.<\/li>\n
  2. The story must be submitted by the parent\/teacher of the student.<\/li>\n
  3. To be eligible for prizes, the story must come from the student’s own mind<\/strong>, with no outside input from family, friends, or teachers.<\/li>\n
  4. The story must be accompanied by the student’s\u00a0first name, age, state\/province of residence, and shipping address.<\/strong>\u00a0(The address should be accompanied by a first and last name, but only the student’s first name will be listed next to his or her entry.)<\/li>\n
  5. Submissions should be emailed to\u00a0info@coverstorywriting.com<\/a>. Please include the phrase “Disastrous Directions” in the subject line of your email.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  6. When contest winners are chosen, we will contact you to find out which prize your student would prefer.\u00a0If your student is a winner, please be watching for this email.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Live Webinar<\/h2>\n

    The webinar will be\u00a0Thursday, February 7<\/strong>, at\u00a07:00 p.m. CST<\/strong>. It will be roughly 45 minutes long. Mr. S. (accompanied by his daughter) will\u00a0read aloud from short stories, award prizes to the winners, and celebrate these humorous tales.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Only students are eligible to receive giveaway items. Again, please make sure that short stories credited to students\u00a0originated with the students themselves<\/strong>\u00a0without input from the parent.<\/p>\n

    Short Story Guidelines<\/h2>\n

    This particular contest submission is covered in\u00a0Lesson 48<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Cover Story\u00a0<\/em>Student Book.<\/p>\n

    Although the Student Book gives a 200\u2013300 word guideline, we are accepting short stories between 200 words and 500 words in length. Longer or shorter pieces will be disqualified.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    In Lesson 46, your student practiced writing step-by-step instructions by\u00a0composing a set of directions<\/strong>\u00a0leading the reader to a fictional place (invented by the student), pretending that this place is located within his or her hometown.<\/p>\n

    For this contest,\u00a0your student will submit the follow-up content from Lesson 48<\/strong>. Here, they are asked to write an article as if they are following the directions written in Lesson 46. Instead of writing from the perspective of the magazine editor,\u00a0they will write from the perspective of a travel writer, documenting their journey to your student’s invented location.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Ultimately, the student is meant to produce a humorous piece of writing detailing “how everything went wrong.” Using sensory details, they will\u00a0describe what unexpected difficulties they encountered on their journey\u2014<\/strong>at least one for each of the steps your student previously created when they wrote the directions.<\/p>\n
